Audio Artist program list

Posted by Rig Oct. 25, 2007 @ 2:38 PM EDT

Here's a list of audio artists on NG and their favourite programs. Big shout-out to DSMagnum, who compiled the original list!
Feel free to get me to change your stuff, or add new things.

Here's some links to the software listed below, in no particular order.

You have to pay for these ones.
SEQUENCERS: FL Studio (Windows only), Reason, Magix Music Maker, Cubase, Noteworthy Composer, Ableton Live, Garageband (Mac only), ACID, Pro Tools
AUDIO EDITORS: Wavelab, Sound Forge, VEGAS, Audition

These are FREE! :D
SEQUENCERS: Buzz, Reaper
AUDIO EDITORS: Audacity, Wavepad

Also, here's a list of free VSTs and VSTis!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

SEQ = Sequencer
You can create songs with VSTs using a Sequencer. Most of them have audio editing functions as well!

AE = Audio Editor
These programs were made do all sorts of crazy things with sound clips - chop them up, rearrange them, control the volume, things like that. Most of them do NOT have sequencing functions.

VST
These are little programs that you load into Sequencers - they create all sorts of sounds and effects. Not all of the VSTs the artists use are listed - just their favourites.

RF = Refills
These are sound packs and settings for the Reason sequencer.

RI = Reason Instruments
These are synths and stuff built into Reason, as Reason doesn't do VSTs.

HW = Hardware
Stuff like keyboards, mixers, headphones - things you can physically manipulate.

SF = Soundfonts
Kinda like VSTs, but with less control overall.

Interesting facts
- People with "DJ" in their names use nothing but FL Studio
- The older users have hardware
- Rucklo and YunVeroz are tied for most hardware.
- Nobody with a "T" in their name uses only Reason.
- All users with a "V" in their name use FL Studio.
- All users with a number in the middle of their names (not at the end) use FL.
- All users with numbers in their names that are used to represent letters use FL.
- There are only 9 users who do not use FL or Reason
- PianoForte is the only person who uses Cubase on it's own.
- If FL Studio and Reason had a kid, it would be the most whoop-ass kid out there. (although I wonder...who would wear the pants in the family?)
- There are two users that do not have sequencers, they just have audio editors.
- Pyro-Maniac25892 is the only user who has a sequencer that contains a capital E
- Almost all the artists on this list follow Rule Ten.

You did add the people who posted in the thread later on right?

Also, may I ask you to change my program to Reason 4.

And maybe add a "preferred refills" under it saying (Reason Drum Kits 2.0), (Reason Pianos) and (Sonic Reality Refills) (not neccesarily in parenthesis)

Oct. 25, 2007 | 2:56 PM Rig responds:

Gotcha, I'll change it and add those things.

All users with a "V" in their name use FL Studio.

All Reason 4 users (except me) have aliases starting with "S."

Nov. 8, 2007 | 1:39 AM Rig responds:

Thanks! I've added you to the hall of fame. :)

Nov. 8, 2007 | 10:30 PM Nav says:

Most popular artist: ParagonX9

Artist with most on Top 5: SBB

Most Norwegian artist: SBB

All users with numbers in their names that are used to represent letters use FL.

Nov. 9, 2007 | 2:33 PM Rig responds:

PX9's already on there. Those number facts are interesting...
So SBB's been on the top 5 consistently, or just at the moment?

Nov. 9, 2007 | 2:15 PM ArisingFlame says:

Random Facts:
There are only 9 users who do not use FL or Reason
PianoForte is the only person who uses Cubase on it's own.
If FL Studio and Reason had a baby, that would be the most whoop-ass baby out there.
There are two users that do not have sequencers, they just have audio editors.

Nov. 9, 2007 | 5:06 PM SBB says:

Arnas is the only user of Magix Music Maker. Aka, the only person with a sequencer that has three capital "M"s.

Nov. 10, 2007 | 11:44 PM Rig responds:

I noticed the sequencer bit too. I don't know if the third fact is interesting enough to make it on the list, though...but I'll put Magix in the "Least used sequencers" section.

Nov. 10, 2007 | 11:13 PM Triskele says:

Haha, I came late to the party >_>;

Nov. 12, 2007 | 2:36 PM Dreamscaper says:

Since it's all just personal preference, what's up with people thinking Reason is gay? In my personal opinion, that's the straightest sequencer that's "come out"; unless, of course, the statistics are done by a gay person because then, and only then, would gayness not be so derogatory. Reason not only is THE best on the market for sequencers, it kicks-ass with features, from what I've experienced put FL to shame! It just plain sounds more professional than any other music program/sequencer. But, I must say, I'm pretty impressed with Ableton Live and how close in comparison it is with the new Reason.

Fruity Loops and Reason are very different even though they can get you to the same level of music producing. Fruity Loops is more of a lower grade sequencer. It's better compared to Cubase, Nuendo, Logic etc. Reason is more of a virtual rack studio that needs no extra VSTs because it is implemented within the program other than sound refills, which most sequencers need anyways. I think it's a great program for anyone who may want to go the hardware route one day, but at the end of the day Reason is better called and used as a VST than a full fledged studio and it's small hassles of rendering and recording at an actual studio. Neither is really better than the other honestly because they're completely different, but Reason will get you laughed at less than FL here on NG from what I've seen and experienced.

BTW...thanks for the add on the list. Hopefully this will keep those millions PMs people leave in my message box asking what program I use. Lol This is a great idea!

Nov. 12, 2007 | 3:30 PM Rig responds:

It was just a little joke amongst us FL users. :) Nice defense, though. I've never tried Reason, but it looks very powerful indeed.
And yeah, just PM all those guys back with a link to this list! :D

Nov. 12, 2007 | 8:37 PM Nav says:

Uggh, DreamScaper, we were just joking around about Reason. Having used both of those programs, I can safely say that I will continue to use FL.

I would LOVE, and I mean LOVE to use Reason, but Reason lacks a few completely essential things that FL has. First off, Reason has a HORRIBLE sequencer. I've used Reason 4, its an improvement, but its still bad. In comparison, FL has a great sequencer. Why? First off, FL allows you to EASILY loop something, such as a break, over and over! Its painless! Next in the sequencer, FL can do both curves AND drawing pencil! WHOA :O! There are no curves in reason, only straight lines. I guess that makes FL the "Fruity (GAY)" one and Reason the "straight" one. Thirdly, FL's use of one-time audio clips is awesome. Just slap it on the bottom and be done with it.

FL also has VSTs, and I'm not saying "WELL REASON DONT HAVE VSTS SO U CANT MAKE SOUNDS LOL!" Personally, I prefer Reason's synths to FL's, but FL's VSTs allows for SO MUCH more FX capabilities than Reason. I mean, its huge the amount of things you can do. Does Reason have a harmonic exciter? A downsampler? I think not. Of course, FL also suffers from having too many VSTs, so its impossible to choose the right one. That, however is easily solved.

Now, why Reason is good. Reason's SOUND is.. simply... incredible. You can get such warm, analog sounds using Reason, its just unparalleled. And the Rack is also awesome to use, and it feels really intuitive, rather than FL. In addition to being intuitive, it also allows you to have an unlimited number of FX, mixers, etc, without creating new sends or inserts.

Now, for the PROBLEMS with each:
FL is "amateurish." People say it is, but it really isn't. It's just that most of the noobs gravitate towards it, so you will get labeled as a user of it. Also, you can never get away with using FL's presets, where you can in Reason. Its just so super obvious...

Problems with Reason... NO CURVES... MY GOD! Its so annoying to have no curves, you don't even know (or do you o.O). Reason also has some really shitty FX devices. Um... I couldn't get a Thor and a Malstrom layered... I just couldn't. It wouldn't work, not with Spider Audio Combiner, not with a combinator, not in a mixer, where the output is routed... whatever. I just have trouble with Reason's FX... and the distortion needs to be tighter... Well, that's not for me to judge, but CamelPhat is convenient, and Reason doesn't have CamelPhat.

Ok, I'm starting to babababbabale so I'll wrap it up with: PERSONAL PREFERENCE! And no, ReWire is not the answer. It is only a means to an end.

Nov. 13, 2007 | 10:56 AM Rig responds:

There you have it, folks.

Nov. 13, 2007 | 2:25 AM Tzunami says:

I got a good fact, The number of people with FL Studios that use the Sytrus: 16

(And I'm the last one on the list that uses it =D)

Nov. 13, 2007 | 10:58 AM Rig responds:

Sure, I'll put that on. Sytrus is great, but it just uses too much of my CPU
Once I get a better comp...

Nov. 13, 2007 | 10:15 AM Dreamscaper says:

It's all good navij11. I just needed clarification on what and why people thought so negatively on Reason since most of the ones who do think negatively about it use FL Studio, which honestly made sense considering how different both sequencers are from each other. I'm still very partial to Reason's production quality well over FL simple usability. I'd rather my music sound better than for it to be produced so simply. I found the simpler the production is on my music, the less options I have to make it sound. But, we've all agreed, it's just a personal preference. I'll shut-up now about this swayed-from-the-original-topic topic. = )

Nov. 13, 2007 | 11:02 AM Rig responds:

With the right VSTs, you can get whatever sound you want out of FL. It kinda sucks - you have to pay MORE to get better sounds. Thanks for your opinions, guys!

Nov. 13, 2007 | 12:07 PM SBB says:

Nov. 14, 2007 | 10:35 AM Rig responds:

lol, Reason orgy

Nov. 13, 2007 | 11:08 PM Tzunami says:

Yeah, I know how that is with the Sytrus. After a while it's a pretty pain when the whole project becomes static.

Nov. 14, 2007 | 10:34 AM Rig responds:

It has so much potential, too.

I'll probably get a microphone soon and maybe effects pedal and keyboard, but they might be a while away...

Nov. 22, 2007 | 1:12 PM Rig responds:

I'll put those on anyway. Why don't you just plug your amp into your computer?

Also, I don't know who this RigAudio guy is, it seems the link to his userpage is broken. Might want to fix that.

Oh, and I'm using the Peach, Toad, Triforce and Magical8bit VST's now for chiptunes, and I don't really use the element of surprise one really, anymore, the novelty wore out =/

TIEM TO UPDATE MAH DATAS. Also, there should be an awesome free vst list.

Sequencer: FL Studio 7, Producer edition (only that, not Reason)
VSTs: StringSynth, Basic_64. CamelCrusher. Puncher

That is what it should be now, since I finally bought FL. Also, any recommendations for good, free vsts, hopefully kvr?

Dec. 15, 2007 | 11:08 PM Rig responds:

I'll make a list :)

Dec. 24, 2007 | 3:51 PM SBB says:

I have Logic Studio 8 now. Words can not describe that intense orgasm of joy.

Also, SBB is easier to type than Rig; for Rig you have to first press shift, write an R then release the shift key and press "ig". For SBB you could just click Caps Lock and press a name with only two letters, or eventually click shift and keep it all the way.
>:(!!!!!!!

Also hardest to type user would probably be ZeRo-BaSs or Pyro-Maniac2587245967423569 wtf

Dec. 29, 2007 | 3:18 AM Rig responds:

Some of us aren't lucky enough to have Caps Lock keys. SOME of us have to press Shift for EVERY LETTER. Therefore, your name would take 6 keystrokes while mine would take only four.

My logic beats your logic. But not your Logic. Added!
